What do you create? How do you do it, and why? Who are your audiences? What are you planning to do next? We are interested!

VALISE artist collective seeks new members, in all creative disciplines. VALISE members must live and/or work on Vashon Island.
VALISE does not show functional art.

VALISE is a collective of creative individuals, dedicated to presenting subjects and media that are unexpected and emergent. We want to stir our audiences, challenge members to initiate fresh work, share the venue with the community, and provoke new ideas. Members share the labor required to operate and promote the gallery exhibition space to the Vashon Island community, as well as to other artists and communities, regionally and nationally.

Members have the opportunity to exhibit their work annually, in conjunction with one or two other members of the collective.  Members also participate in two or more collective group shows, which coincide with the Vashon Art Studio Tours in May and December. Members have the opportunity to show a wide variety of work, including installations, performances, video, sound, including media and methods we have not yet imagined. VALISE is an established venue located in the downtown core of Vashon Island.

Members learn from each other by discussing new ideas, collaborating, and supporting each other’s creative development.  Members also create and participate in workshops, critiques, openings, public presentations and discussion, life drawing sessions, and a variety of community-related events every month.

Members need to be innovative, self-directed and active in gallery operations, events and projects.  In addition to hosting openings and weekly responsibility for gallery operations, VALISE also has several working groups, and each member is expected to participate in one or more groups, as needed. Members commit to at least one year of active and energetic involvement.

Each member pays a monthly fee (currently $50) at the beginning of each month. Membership fees cover rent, supplies and operating costs. Members also incur other expenses, such as contributing wine and food for openings. VALISE has no employees.

A 60/40 (artist/collective) percentage is applied to all sales by members.

Members currently meet on the second Monday of each month (6pm - 8pm) to discuss issues, concerns and projects. Attendance is expected and is an important part of the membership experience.

Members are encouraged to contribute new ideas, mine old ones, and inspire the collective’s activities and direction.
