Hideaway - Sharon Shaver and Jiji Saunders

“Hideaway” opens First Friday, October 6 at VALISE Gallery. The exhibit is a visual conversation about seeking shelter and solitude in settings far from the madding crowd. Member artists Jiji Saunders and Sharon Shaver will show acrylic and encaustic paintings of forest creatures, cabins and caves. They are collaborating with a group of artists to create 3D interactive representations of their painted imagery. Shaver’s bear will be portrayed in brocade by Shaver and textile artist Kim Brown. During the month of October, VALISE artists will construct one of Saunders’ shelters in the gallery.

Shavers’ colorful acrylic paintings show bear, coyote, fox, cougar in wild northern landscapes, dealing with the impact of a solitary cabin plunked down in their environment. There have been many cabins in Shavers’ life. The duality of enjoying wilderness living and at the same time feeling a sadness for the trees cut down and the animals displaced has occupied her mind for years. When she lived off the grid in a log cabin she built in Alaska, Shaver enjoyed both the immense quiet and the special joy of socializing with other cabin dwellers and many glimpses of the moose who her cabin displaced.

Saunders’ encaustic paintings feature caves and primitive shelters in wild wide-open spaces under big dramatic skies. Her paintings are sparked by her experiences passing caves as a kid in the Rocky Mountains and piling grass with her daughters into hiding places that easily collapse.

 Hideaway

 See that slumped place -
pump house or fairy den.
I am hiding inside -
but you are not invited in.
Purpose unknown, call it
Shack, shed, or cabin.
Rarely -  there is a congress
between persons here.
More often - a meeting
of person and perception.
The quiet lets me think.
